Joe Brown Obituary

Mr. Joe Carney Brown, 75, of Williamston, NC went into eternal rest on September 24,2022. Funeral Services will be held 12 noon Thursday, at Back Swamp Church of Christ. A viewing will be held one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Ministry of Comfort Entrusted to Paradise Funeral Home Inc.

Joe Carney Brown was born on December 27, 1946, to the late Leon T. Brown and Birdie O. Brown. He departed this life and entered into eternal rest Saturday morning, September 24, 2022.
Joe was born and raised in Williamston, NC. Joe and his siblings attended Williams Chapel AME Zion Church. He attended E. J. Hayes High School. He was very active at his school and a prominent member of the band, playing the saxophone and assisting the band director when needed. At a young age, Joe learned how to play the piano by ear. This talent led him to be on the
local radio station at a time when blacks were not allowed. He graduated from E. J. Hayes High School on June 2, 1966. On November 28, 1969, Joe married Jacqueline Smallwood.
To this union, two daughters were born, Michelle and Nonie. Joe enlisted in the Army where he served his country until his discharge in 1973. In his later years, Joe became a member of Back Swamp Church of Christ. He was a member of the Willing Workers, a ministry focused on servicing the community. He was also a member of the choir until his health declined. Joe retired from Weyerhaeuser in Plymouth, NC after 34 years of employment.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife Jacqueline S. Brown, brothers, Shelton, Herbert, Dale, Olan and sister Iva Adrienne. He leaves to cherish the memory of his life two loving daughters, Michelle B. Hardy (Lenard) of Wendell, NC and Nonie King of Williamston, NC; Two sons, Kenneth Smallwood (Sheila) and Marvin Purvis (Shekeela) of Sikeston, MO; four sisters, Alice B. Moore (William) of Kinston, NC, Brenda B. Walker (Warner) of Detroit, MI, Francine B. Williams of Greenville, NC, Clemmenette B. Bond (Styron) of Williamston, NC; one aunt, Ella Mae Ormond of Williamston, NC; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Brown of Smyrna, GA, Theresa DeVaughn of Greensboro, NC and Emma Smallwood of Williamston, NC; one brother-in-law William Smallwood Jr. (Brenda) of Charlotte; and honorary son, Aaron Price of Williamston, NC. He also leaves a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
